Project Description
NEC 3 Project Manager and Supervisor for a new build adult resource centre and sports facility at Allander Leisure Centre existing development site in Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire. Following a 12 month design period, work started on site on 11 January 2021 to create an ambitious learning and sports complex.
The proposals include the demolition of the existing sports facility buildings and construction of 2 new buildings in a series of phases. One building houses an adult resource centre and state of the art leisure centre. The second building will be a lightweight sports dome to house a football and tennis centre. The buildings will be linked via a glazed corridor together with hard and soft landscaping. The budget is 41m, and includes for the following elements:
- Adult Resource Centre
- Swimming Pools/Sauna/Steam Room
- Gym
- Games Hall
- Restaurant and café space
- Multi-purpose games hall
- Spectator areas
- Studios
- Indoor football pitches
- Indoor Tennis Courts
The tandem build required the construction to be split into the following phases:
- Phase 1. Demolition of existing football and tennis facility. New adult resource centre and leisure centre replacing this. Now successfully complete and open to the public.
- Phase 2. Closure and demolition of existing leisure centre and carpark works. Now progressing on site
- Phase 3. New football and tennis centre replacing existing leisure centre
The whole facility is due to be complete by September 2023.
Our Role / Scope
Our role is to manage the project on behalf of EDC ensuring the project is successfully delivered on time and on budget. We are responsible for the administration of the NEC Contract and are also acting as NEC Supervisor on the works to ensure EDC not only have a building delivered on time and budget but also of lasting quality in line with their requirements.
Challenges
The project continued through the design period during the onset of the Covid 19 Pandemic, even so, the fast pace of design continued with financial close being achieved within just 12 months from inception.
A project of this type involves a large number of stakeholders each with their own wants and needs. Addressing all requirements has been particularly onerous, however through careful management, the project has been a resounding success to date with the first phase open and welcoming services users.
